Facial recognition coming at US airports

TSA security checkpoints are about to get automated soon with expansion of facial recognition program to over 430 airports in the US over next couple of years.

The facial recognition program works by comparing your face with image on your identification document, with TSA reporting over 97% accuracy across varying skin tones.

Also, TSA doesn’t retain your biometric data and is overwritten as soon as next passenger steps up to the queue.

Why it matters: Although convenient (and faster), people usually don’t have an option to “opt out” of facial recognition programs. But a more worrying trend is private corporations adopting biometric identification for access control.

Sports stadiums are marketing “mandatory” facial recognition as “Your face is your ticket”! Madison Square Garden in NYC is already using it to deny entry to certain people - Here’s a list of 20 more venues using biometrics.

If you combine cameras with AI-powered facial recognition algorithms, you could easily track thousands of people in real time, often without consent.
