Universal Language Translator

One AI model to interact with 1,100+ languages

What: Meta announced a new AI model called Massively Multilingual Speech (MMS), that converts text-to-speech and speech-to-text for more than 1,100 languages!

Why it matters:-

  1. 11x more languages: Existing speech recognition models only cover ~100 languages. MMS does 11x better at 1,100+ languages!

  2. Half the Error Rate: MMS achieves half the word error rate than OpenAI's Whisper (while covering 11x more languages)

Lower error rate is better

  1. Massive dataset: Labelled data for 1,100 languages Unlabelled data for nearly 4,000 languages!

  2. Open source: Data and code is open source, but code's license is CC-BY-NC 4.0. You can share and adapt it, but not for commercial use.

Bigger picture : One single AI model can now write and speak more than 1,100 languages, which is 1/7th of all know spoken languages by humans! This improves recognition, synthesis and takes us one step closer to the science fiction of a universal language translator.

Meta is also pushing hard on open-sourcing foundation AI models, contributing way to more to Open Source than Open AI.
