Pirated books for training AI

TL;DR: The popular Books3 dataset was taken down because of researchers found pirated books.

In the race to build smarter AI models, tech companies will scoop in any data they get their hands on.

A new lawsuit claims tech companies including Meta and Bloomberg used pirated version of fiction and non-fiction books included in Book3 dataset for training.

The Books3 dataset:

  • Contains 200,000 books, mostly published in the last 20 years

  • Includes works of authors like Stephen King, Zadie Smith, Michael Pollan more.

Why this matters: The books3 dataset was created in 2020 in efforts to make AI development more accessible. The AI models learning from this dataset of books improve the capability of generating realistic and coherent outputs. But now that the dataset was taken down, it makes it harder for incumbent startups to compete with Big Tech.
