OpenAI wants Gov’t regulations on AI

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before a US senate panel yesterday about building gov’t regulations on development and use of AI.

Sam proposed three key actions:

  • Licensing agency: Gov’t should establish a new agency to grant and revoke licenses for large-scale AI efforts.

  • Safety standards: Gov’t should create a new set of safety standards focusing on dangerous capability evaluations (such as self-replication of AI or exfiltration into the wild)

  • Audits: Gov’t should implement independent audits to confirm compliance with stated safety thresholds.

Why it matters: Tech companies pushing for gov’t to build regulations is a first and emphasizes on importance of containing AI tech.

Generative AI has the power to transform the way we work, with OpenAI’s own research suggesting automation would impact 80% of US workers!

AI is also bound to revolutionize fields like healthcare, physics, biology.

However it can also fuel the spread of disinformation and used in all sorts of mass manipulation. This is where gov’t regulation comes into picture.
