OpenAI: Limited by GPUs

The AI wave was kicked-off by ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI, and now we know a little bit more about their future plans.

3 key points:

  • GPU Limitation: While this is good news for NVIDIA, tech companies are struggling to get their hands on GPUs. This includes OpenAI, as they aren’t able to roll out new features like longer 32K context windows simply because they don’t have enough GPUs!

  • Faster ChatGPT: For 2023, OpenAI wants to make GPT-4 cheaper and faster, increase context windows to potentially 1 million tokens, extend the fine-tuning API to latest models.

  • Regulation and Open Source: OpenAI will keep advocating for the gov’t regulation on AI and might open-source the older GPT-3 model !

The majority of the tech companies and startups rely on AI tech from OpenAI, so getting a sense of their future direction is important. What it means for you as an end user is cheaper and faster AI integrated products on the horizon.
