New York’s unavoidable surveillance

Automated speeding tickets by cameras on freeways and intersections is old news. Now, AI systems can sift through billions of license plate images to identify travel patterns that resemble a criminal behavior.

New York’s Westchester County Police Department flagged a vehicle's travel pattern as “suspicious”, eventually leading to a drug-trafficking bust! The AI identified the car by scanning a database of over 1.6 billion license plate records!

The AI system, built by Rekor, can be installed in existing cameras and could aggregate vehicle location data from multiple states.

Why it matters:

Unavoidable: The camera systems are ubiquitous and the authorities are not legally obliged to provide information on the whereabouts. You wouldn’t even know if you are being monitored.

Privacy Concerns: Every vehicle is automatically being subjected to an “unprecedented search”, with your data stored for at least two years!

Bigger Picture: The AI tool's integration in existing camera systems and its cross-state data sharing capabilities pose a real concern about expanding surveillance with limited legal protection for the public.

There is a new boom in the surveillance market with a massvie potential to aid crime prevention, but it’s also on the edge of infringing on people's privacy. Balancing these considerations is crucial for the responsible adoption of the AI-powered systems.
