Three Things to Start Your Day
Microsoft’s Data Privacy Incident
A misconfiguration in access-control permissions led to a data-privacy incident at Microsoft. A github repository was set to “full-control”, meaning anyone could access and modify its 38 TB of data including AI models, images, passwords to Microsoft services, secret keys and more than 30,000 internal Microsoft Teams messages.
Although the data had been exposed since 2020, it was only recently discovered and fixed. But it highlights how seemingly simple issues in data handling could result in massive privacy incidents.
Combating DeepFakes
This is a fake image of actor Tom cruise generated using deep-fake AI
AI can generate hyper-realistic fake images and videos that are indistinguishable from real-life content. For instance, here’s a fake video of Tom Cruise.
Metaphysic introduced a new tool that allows creators to manage the public use of their “AI-generated” content, encompassing video, image, and voice. It also helps debunk fake content by helping you verify the authenticity of the content.
US copyright laws have yet to adapt to the complexities introduced by AI-generated content and there remains a legal ambiguity over copyright protection of AI-generated art.
AI regulations shaping up in the UK
Governments around the world are racing to build AI regulations that guide development and use of AI models.
The UK released its own version of AI regulations, focused on “foundational” AI models like ChatGPT and Meta’s Llama-2 for researchers and businesses.
The regulation provides a set of 7 guiding principles - Accountability, Access, Diversity, Choice, Flexibility, Fair dealing and Transparency.
While the U.S. has yet to establish comprehensive AI regulations, the UK is ambitiously aiming to become the “AI capital” of the world.
