Microsoft partners with AMD to build AI chips

Nvidia caught the AI boom with 100% gain YTD!

What: Microsoft is joining forces with AMD to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the GPU market.

Nvidia currently holds astonishing 95% share of the GPU market for AI, primarily because of the CUDA software libraries for AI, superior GPUs with AI-accelerating Tensor cores.

Why it matters: Microsoft took a massive lead in building cloud network for training and deployment of AI models. It currently operates “tens of thousands” of GPUs, including the top of the line H100 chips from Nvidia that retails for $40,000 a piece!

But this is very expensive to operate and expand as more businesses shift to using AI in cloud.

To combat this, Microsoft has been developing a new chip under the codename "Athena" since 2019, with close to $2 billion invested in the project.

The new partnership with AMD could lead to significant disruption and innovation in the AI chip market and challenge Nvidia’s position.
