Good Morning. This is Refactored. Your favorite tech newsletter :)

In today's edition: Microsoft is integrating ChatGPT in Bing search, Twitter will launch a $1000/mo subscription for Gold checkmark and of course Memes.

Reading time is 3 minutes. Let’s do this.

Main Thing

Microsoft Bing is getting ChatGPT boost

What: Several users were able to preview Bing's new conversational search engine that's powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Why it matters: Primary source of revenue for search engines is Ads - Websites pay search engines to show their ads above regular results, for a higher chance at attracting visitors. Conversational AI is set to upend the search industry - Why would you visit a website if a chatbot can answer your questions?

Google might be most impacted since major chunk of its revenue comes from search and advertising. And for the first time in decades, there is a real threat to its business model.

What’s next: Google is gearing up to launch its answer to ChatGPT at an event scheduled on Feb 8.

Small Plates

Twitter has been all over the news last week; Let's round them up:

  1. Gold checkmark: It will charge businesses $1,000/mo for a Gold verification check, with additional $50/mo for affiliates. The company already has a $8/mo subscription for a blue checkmark.

  2. API access: After removing the free access of the Twitter API, the company will make provisions for 'good bots' with a write-only free tier.

  3. Breakeven: After rumors of bankruptcy, Elon musk tweeted the company is on right track to breakeven.

  4. Share revenue with Creators: Twitter will share ad-revenues with creators for ads that appear in their reply threads!
