Meta releases Open Source AI model 🤖

Plus: Google wants employees to share desks 👨🏻‍💻

Refactored

Good Morning! Today we are covering Meta’s new AI model, Google’s desk-sharing policy and memes, as usual.

Reading time is 4 minutes. Let’s do this!

Main Thing ☕️

Meta releases new open source AI model

What: Facebook's AI research lab (FAIR) released a new 'foundation' AI model for generative text, Llama.

Why it matters: There are 3 key components to an AI model:

  • Data: Quantity (and quality) of data is the single most important factor in a model's performance.

  • Algorithm/Code: Although proprietary, both Algorithm and code are publicly available to a large extent.

  • Training: Training a large AI model easily costs millions of dollars due to expensive GPUs.

Meta’s Llama is trained on publicly available data, with code and final model available for download as non-commercial open-source. This means you can use the final model without spending millions on training.

But here's the key part - Facebook's model is 10x smaller than OpenAI's GPT-3 and still beats it in majority of the tasks. The model is small enough to be run on a 16GB desktop GPU!

Big Picture: AI is the next platform, and the benefits are obvious. Meta is positioning itself to be ‘the’ platform by releasing a powerful model that’s accessible enough to be run on a desktop PC.

Plus, Llama is a foundation-model, meaning you can 'fine-tune' it for your tasks. Example - if you're in finance, you can 'fine-tune' it to understand financial jargon, or 'fine-tune' it to write a marketing copy.

Tech Roundup

Google: The Trillion dollar company wants employees to share their desks with coworkers! Google wanted to improve collaboration, so it mandated employees to return to office in 2022. But it wants them to come to office on alternate days, allowing two employees to use one desk, and save on rent.

Adobe: DoJ is getting serious about anti-trust. Now Adobe is facing the heat with DoJ working on a suit to block Adobe's $20B acquisition of Figma, a startup for designing apps and website interfaces.

DoJ: The US Department of Justice (DoJ) is seeking to sanction Google for 'destruction of evidence' related to the anti-trust lawsuit on unlawfully monopolizing the online search market.
Key point behind the claim is that Google instructed employees to avoid discussing sensitive issues such as competition over email, but then auto-deleted chat conversations between employees.
