Trump is back on Facebook and Instagram
Former president will soon be able to watch reels and share memes
What: Meta lifted the ban on Trump, allowing him to return on Facebook and Instagram. The ban was implemented on grounds of inciting violence after his followers stormed US capitol on Jan 6, 2021.
Why it matters: Trump is officially running for President in 2024, and access to social media is crucial to his campaign. Twitter lifted his ban in Nov 2022, and with Meta reinstating Trump's account, he can reach out to with his massive audience: 34 million on Facebook, 24 million on Instagram, and 87 million on Twitter.
Zoom Out: Companies like Meta can not be held liable for content created by its users according to a law (popularly known as Section 230), but that could change under a new lawsuit in the Supreme court. The tech companies are moving to reposition themselves as content-provider platform, rather than 'moderator' of content.
By The Numbers
100M: Number of active users on Github, up 3X in last five years.
$2.5B: Walmart's new investment in India, owning majority stake in Flipkart and PhonePe.
$3.6B: Tesla to build a new manufacturing plant in Nevada to build battery and Semi-trucks, creating 3000 jobs.
New Legislation
Bitcoin: Arizona's lawmakers introduced a new bill to make bitcoin a legal tender - If passed, Bitcoin will be a legal form of currency similar to US dollars, allowing residents to pay taxes, debts or any transactions with bitcoin.
Minimum wage: for Ride-share Drivers along with paid sick leave and benefits could be implemented in Massachusetts according to a new proposed bill. This will eat into already slim profits of Uber and Lyft as they have long battled to label the drivers as 'contractors' to avoid paying benefits.
