 BIG TECH

Dr. Google will see you now

Doctors are often rated as one of the most trusted professions, but would you trust an AI chatbot to answer your health questions? Google is betting on a 'yes!'

Google has been testing its AI chatbot, Med-PaLM 2, designed to answer queries related to medical information at the Mayo Clinic Hospital Institute since April.

Customers trying out Med-PaLM 2 will control their data, which will be encrypted, and Google won’t have access to it.

Google’s AI Med-Palm-2 vs Human Physician

Why It Matters: The AI chatbot isn't here to replace doctors, but rather to act as an assistant to both doctors and patients.

It's available 24/7 with zero wait time and maintains an unbiased approach towards the patient. It's also remarkably intelligent, scoring up to 86.5% on the MedQA, a dataset based on questions from the United States Medical Licensing Exams.

The Bigger Picture: As millennials, we already know this - never trust 'Google' search results of your symptoms because the results can be wildly inaccurate.

But, this lack of reliable information is pervasive throughout our healthcare system, from the initial search to during and post care. This is something the AI is set to change!

 ROBOTICS

AI-powered Security Guard

A 5-foot-10, 400-pound new robot is now patrolling the grounds of a high school in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Using AI, the robot learns the school's normal activity patterns and detects individuals who are on campus after hours or displaying aggressive behavior.

Why it matters: The robot is equipped with a 360-degree camera to provide real-time video footage to security.

The school district disabled the facial recognition feature on this robot, but the robots are now being sold across the country. Once again, the regulation hasn’t caught up with the tech, but the ethical implications of data collection and identification need to be well defined.
