ChatGPT on your iPhone

What: OpenAI launched the official app for ChatGPT for iOS in the US!

The app also supports voice inputs, meaning you could dictate your questions instead of typing. This speech-to-text feature is powered by OpenAI’s Whisper AI model that you get for free!

The new app:

• Kills the wrapper Chatbot market: hundreds of chatbot apps were launched over the last couple of months, built on top of OpenAI’s API and raked in millions of dollars in subscriptions. Free official app would impact wrapper apps.

• Better than Siri?: ChatGPT with Voice input makes it much more useable than Siri on iOS.

The app is free to use and available on iOS in the US (download here), and will soon roll out to other countries and Android.

Bumpy ride ahead for Nvidia

What: Big tech companies are pouring billions of dollars to develop their custom chips for AI, jeopardizing Nvidia’s dominance in the AI chip market.

• Google claimed their new AI chips were 1.7x faster than Nvidia.

• Microsoft partnered with AMD to develop new chips.

• Amazon already offers cloud instances with its own custom AI chips.

• Now, Meta announced a new plan to build the next generation of AI infrastructure, powered by custom AI chips and a super computer with 16,000 GPUs!

Why it matters: The AI chips are expensive, costing up to $40,000 a piece, and you need thousands of them working together for days in order to train a huge AI model. Naturally, AI data centers costs billions of dollars to build and operate.

Nvidia stock is up 120% in 2023 partly because of the boom in AI. But with some of its biggest customers developing their own silicon and chipping away Nvidia’s 95% market share, it might have to up its game.
