Are we ready for driverless cars?

Cruise has been involved in hundreds of incidents over the past two years, including obstructing an ambulance, colliding with cars and buses, and getting stuck in wet concrete at construction sites.

Although Cruise driverless cars are programmed to pull over when emergency vehicles are nearby as any human-driver should, this often created unsafe situations.

In one particular incident, firefighters had to stand in front of the car to prevent it from driving over hoses, eventually resorting to breaking the car's window to stop it.

Just a week after California approved 24/7 driverless car operations, Cruise was involved in two additional incidents, leading to a reduction of 50% in the number of cars.

Bigger Picture: Building self-driving cars is notoriously hard! Tesla promised a fully autonomous car by 2017 but it’s still struggling to detect lanes. Cruise, with more than $15 billion in funding, has less than 400 self-driving cars and is plagued with incidents.
