Inflection AI’s $800M Supercomputer

What: Inflection AI, an AI startup, has built one of the largest supercomputer in the industry! With 22,000 top of the line NVIDIA H100 GPUs, it’s right behind the world’s fastest supercomputer, AMD's Frontier.

By the numbers:

  1. GPUs: 22,000 units of NVIDIA H100!

  2. CPUs: 700 four-node racks of Intel Xeon CPUs!

  3. Energy Consumption: Estimated ~31 MegaWatts of energy, enough to power 2300 homes for a year in the US!

  4. Cost: Estimated $800 million! The H100 GPU retails for $40,000 a piece!

Why it matters: We already know GPUs are getting harder to find. Amidst this shortage, tech companies are even acquiring other companies who have stockpile of GPUs!

But what’s interesting is an AI startup, known for building a chatbot, built one of the largest supercomputers in the world! Plus, somehow they were able to acquire 22,000 GPUs!

Another takeaway is the supercomputers are no longer the playthings of massive corporations. Startups like Inflection AI are making serious inroads, and it's a fascinating shift to witness.
