AI-powered Audio Keyloggers

Next time you type your password, you might want to mute your microphone. A new AI, developed by researchers at Durham University in the UK, can steal data by analyzing the sound of keyboard strokes with over 95% accuracy!

What you should know:

  1. Targeted attack: The AI model learns the sound patterns of a user using a microphone

  2. Works over Audio calls: Sounds recorded over Zoom or Skype calls is enough for the AI to predict typed words, with over 92% accuracy.

Why it matters: Since the AI tech is fairly new with low awareness, malicious actors are using it in multitude of ways. For instance, there’s been a sharp uptick in scammers using AI to clone voices to impersonate people.

The AI is a new style of “Audio Keylogger” where a scammer doesn’t even need to break into your computer. For instance, audio samples of keystrokes recorded over zoom call or in a coffee shop is enough to predict what you’re typing.
