AI is disrupting Education businesses

What: Education businesses are set to fundamentally change with advancements in AI chatbots.

Chegg, a major online edtech company, admitted ChatGPT would impact the new customer growth in quarterly earnings earlier this week. The result was a staggering 48% drop in its stock price!

How: Chegg relies heavily on online tutoring services, connecting students with tutors.

However, the landscape is shifting with AI chatbots like ChatGPT entering the scene, offering personalized tutoring services at a fraction of the cost.
This development poses a significant challenge to Chegg's core business model.

As a countermeasure, Chegg launched its own AI tutor, CheggMate, but that might not be able to make up for the loss in revenue.

Bigger picture: Up until now, personalized education that caters to children's individual strengths has been accessible to only a select few. In most parts of the world, education follows a standardized approach, with children being evaluated through uniform exams and growing within the constraints of established educational systems.

As AI continues to advance and become more widely available, we can expect significant changes in the way education is both delivered and consumed.

For edtech companies like Chegg and Udemy, a disruption is forced upon them, and will need to invent a new business model to grow.
